About the accommodation

The picturesque mill with its medieval walls has been carefully restored and lovingly cared for in recent years, and now this small ecological paradise is open to holidaymakers - our mill is a small island where we try to maintain the balance between nature, animals and people and we are happy to welcome guests who share this interest. In Gaiole, people still talk about the tasty wholemeal bread that was baked with the fresh flour of the Piermaggiore mill - it is said to have tasted particularly good because the flour was ground very slowly with the huge millstones and did not heat up. Only in late autumn and winter there was enough water to be able to grind continuously, for transitional periods the water was stowed in the reservoir behind the house, and then let onto the horizontal wooden turbines by trains.

Accommodation

In the guesthouse in the old mill walls, visitors can expect four guest rooms (for two to three persons each) with their beautiful old furniture and terracotta floors that let them feel Tuscany down to the last detail. The large common kitchen with open fireplace is the centre of the house. It is fully equipped for cooking. Two bathrooms (with showers and toilets) are also available. Our solar system provides pleasant low-voltage light in the rooms and the refrigerator is operated with solar power. The water system is based on own well water, which flows out of the taps as usual. The bathing stove can be heated in a few easy steps and thus provides pleasantly warm shower water. Our bio seepage system requires biodegradable soaps and hygiene products. Of course, there is also a composting plant for all remnants that can be used. Guest pets can be brought along only conditionally and after arrangement.

Surroundings and activites

In the heart of Tuscany, in the Colli Senesi, the hills of Siena, lies the mill in the Arbia valley, nestled between wild areas, olive groves and vineyards. On the hills, cypresses rise into the sky between the natural stone walls of individual farms, while an old ruined tower invites you to explore. The village of Pianella is about four kilometres away, where you can buy fresh produce from the region's organic grocery store. Siena, a pearl of the Middle Ages, is not far away. The hills of Chianti with its wonderful little stone villages invite you to enjoy, not least because of the many small winegrowers who tempt you with a drop of wine. From the mill, many things can be explored on foot in the surrounding area. Bicycles can also be rented from us and there is a local bus service to Siena. But also by car you can discover countless interesting places in the surroundings.

Location and getting around

The Mulino Piermaggiore is located between Gaiole and Pianella, a little north of Siena, in the middle of Tuscany. To arrive by bus we recommend the rapid bus Rapido, which leaves from Florence to the bus stop' Lo Stellino' in Siena, the nearest train station is also in Siena. Both of them can be picked up by prior arrangement. By car from the Autostrada Florence - Rome via the exit Val d' Arno. From there, follow the signs for Siena until Gaiole. Approximately nine kilometres after Gaiole, at the junction turn right towards Fontanelle. Shortly after the bridge you will find our mill on the left-hand side.
